History

The Doss Center is a dream realized for the Parker County community.  What began as the Heritage Gallery-one room inside the Weatherford Public Library-is now 23,000 square foot, award-winning building thanks to the hard work of a group of community volunteers called Civic Development, Inc., and the dedication of our entire community.

Parker County’s rich tapestry of cattle barons and cowboys, Broadway stars and political leaders is beginning to be shared and showcased in spacious state-of-the-art exhibit spaces.  Along with the three galleries, the Doss Heritage and Culture Center includes community spaces that can be used for a variety of purposes including small concerts, educational programs, meetings, celebrations and events for all segment of the community.  The museum and its leadership are dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the area while educating future generations about the past.

Members enjoy benefits such as free admittance to the museum and all of its exhibits, advance notice of new exhibit openings and the special events that surround them, discounts on cultural events and camps and the knowledge of helping Parker County’s premiere cultural destination.

Donation opportunities in addition to membership are available.

Donating To The Doss

The Doss Heritage and Culture Center is a collecting institution and welcomes donations of historical objects from the community.  The museum accepts objects, as well as photographs and archival or paper materials (which may be collections of family papers, documents, maps, and the like).  Donations are Proposed donations and are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Do the items have significant Parker County historical interest or   social impact?
  • Do the items have significant research or display potential?
  • What is the provenance of the object? (Who made it? Who bought it? Who owned it? When and Where was it used?)
  • Is the object in good condition?
  • Does the museum have the necessary resources to properly house and care for the object?
  • Does the museum already have several examples of the item in the permanent collection?
  • Does the potential donor have legal right to give the object away?

Items might also be accepted into the Doss Center’s Teaching Collection.  These items are used as hands-on teaching tools for school groups, or as exhibit items that might eventually wear out and need to be replaced.  These items enhance the educational experience of our visitors, and they are a very important part of our mission here at the Doss.

If you think you have an object you would like to donate that meets the collecting criteria, please call the museum at 817-599-6168
