Two different artists will be highlighted in the Cartwright Gallery beginning January 10 through April 1.
Texas Wildwood Originals- E.O. “Ted” Hemenway- I started working with wood in junior high school making the usual cutting boards (which we still have and use), candle holders, etc. It started out to be a wonderful hobby and has since turned into a passion. The (wild) wood I use is gathered from ranches all around Texas. Species used are pecan, oak, walnut, bois d’ arc (or simply “bodark” here in Texas), birds-eye maple, cedar and my favorite and most used wood-mesquite.
Sculptural Assemblages- Dwain Kelley- Discovery. Almost all of these works are grounded in the unearthing of another time. Using a palette of old wood, metals, gold leaf, cloth, glass, rocks, or new materials aged to emulate the look of another time-I’m attempting to re-create the excitement of discovery I felt as a kid. I hope that as you experience these works they will reignite some of the excitement and wonder every time you look at them.
