Now on Exhibit! Gracie the Bison Skeleton and our Special Arrowhead Collection!

28 years after its discovery, the Doss Heritage and Culture Center will have “Gracie” a young bison skeleton on display. “Gracie” named after the Grace family who discovered the skeleton on their land in Parker County in 1985 is thought to be a ceremonially-buried buffalo. In February the remains of the buffalo and the Doss Heritage and Culture Center’s extensive arrowhead collection will be on display for a year in the gallery. “This is an opportunity for the DHCC to bring more of our collection out for the public to enjoy. We are currently working on developing a more permanent design for the Grace bison and our arrowhead collection but we wanted to share the story of the bison’s discovery with our visitors in the mean time,” said Curator Amanda Rush.

Candlelight Christmas Gift Market December 8th, 2012 from 9am-8pm

Tour beautiful homes decorated for the holidays and finish your Christmas shopping all in one fantastic day.  It’s easy to do when you attend the Candlelight Tour of Homes and the Gift Market on Saturday, December 8.  The Tour of Homes is from 1 to 7 p.m., but you can get your shopping done early and late.  Gift Market hours are from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Tickets for the Tour of Homes can be purchased at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center on tour day.

The Market is held in conjunction with the annual Candlelight Tour of Homes which brings visitors from throughout the Metroplex to Weatherford.  Last year’s market hosted vendors selling luxury bath and body items; purses; jewelry; handmade pens and bottle stoppers; glass mosaics; embroidered items; notecards and photo prints; gourmet kitchen items; candles and scents for the home; home décor; clothing, accessories and shoes.

“The Gift Market was a great opportunity to shop locally and avoid the mall during the holiday season,” said Miranda Murphy, Events Coordinator at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center.  “We’ve got a wide variety of items, vendors and price points.  “I know one mother who brought her son to the Gift Market so he could purchase all of the presents for his family in one place.  It was a fun and low stress way to buy something for everyone on his list,” she continued.

A few booths are still available, so if you have a business or would like to have a booth during the Candlelight Market, sign up now by filling out an application and providing four photographs or flyers of your work and a $50 deposit.  There are two different booth sizes and the prices range from $140 for a 6’ x 6’ space up to $200 for an 8’ x 8’ premiere lobby booth space.  Electricity can be provided as well as table linens if needed.  Extra publicity is available on advertising materials for a small additional fee.

Spirit of Wyoming Statue on Display at the Doss

The Spirit of Wyoming model was selected in a 1978 competition against some 23 works. The finished monument was completed and placed on the Wyoming State Capitol grounds in 1986.

Unlike any other bucking bronco, the composition was designed to stand like an inverted pyramid, 19 feet high including its pedestal. It is full of high action, and whether or not the rider will stay on the horse is uncertain. Horse and rider move as one.

Sculptor Ed Fraughton

Fraughton works to create sculpture that is both monumental in scale and that inspires its view to move around it, experiencing it from many different angles. “My quest as a sculptor has been to sculpt a three-dimensional design. Sculpture should never be designed from a narrow point of view. The best sculpture makes you move around it. A painter directs your eye from one part of the picture it another, the sculptor surrounds it.” In addition to his many commissions throughout the United States, including the Mormon Battalion Monument in San Diego, California’s Presidio Park, and the Spirit of Wyoming in Cheyenne, Fraughton is a founding member of the National Academy of Western Art and a longtime member of the National Sculpture Society and the Society of Animal Artists. He has exhibited throughout the United States at such venues as the Whitehouse in Washington, D.C., and at the Prix de West.

The Spirit of Wyoming is on display at the Doss and on sale. The proceeds of the sale help fund special events, education endeavors, and further aspirations to fulfill our mission to collect, preserve, and exhibit the history of Parker County and Texas.
